Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria and one of the biggest in sub-Saharan Africa. It is a major port city on the Bight of Benin in the Gulf of Guinea. Lagos served as the federal capital of Nigeria until December 1991, when Abuja took over this role. Despite this change, Lagos remains the unofficial seat of many government agencies.
The city's population is primarily concentrated on Lagos Island, situated in Lagos Lagoon. The topography of Lagos is notable for its islands, sandbars, and lagoons, with the city sprawling over what were once its four main islands: Lagos Island, Iddo (now connected to the mainland), Ikoyi (now attached to Lagos Island), and Victoria Island (now the tip of the Lekki Peninsula).
In 2022, Lagos was home to approximately 15.4 million people, making it the largest city in Africa. The population has been steadily increasing as thousands of people migrate to the city each year in search of better job opportunities and an improved quality of life. Projections suggest that by 2035, Lagos could be home to about 24.4 million residents.
Lagos is segregated into Lagos Island and the mainland, each with its own popular areas. On Lagos Island, you can find districts like Ikoyi and Victoria Island, while the mainland has areas such as Ikeja, which serves as the state capital, and Surulere.
